A Simple Way to Start the College Conversation with Your Teen

A Simple Way to Start the College Conversation with Your Teen? As we approach senior year, it’s time to begin thinking about that college future you’ve been tossing aside for years. It’s not as hard as you may think to start the college conversation with your teenager. In fact, many adults are beginning to re-evaluate their lives, careers and, yes, even their college plans as the economy continues to face down with the recession. So how do you get started?

First, be honest with yourself. Determine exactly what you’re looking for in college and how much you can spend. Know that it will take some effort on your part and that you’ll likely have to compromise. But you must stay committed and determined. This is very important because college is where you’ll meet the people who will form the most lasting relationships and solidify your personal beliefs and opinions about college.

Take the lead when it comes to initiating the conversation. Make sure everyone understands where you stand and what’s expected. If you’re uncertain or uncomfortable, don’t be afraid to admit that fact. Then, take some time to discuss what you hope to learn from this discussion.

Always keep in mind that the first impression you make on anyone attending college is likely to stick. That impression won’t just be made by the professors or other students but by the people you’ll interact with on campus. Therefore, dress properly for your first few days in college – wear a suit. This doesn’t mean that you’ll need to fit in clothing, work in the library or any other strange habits, but that you’ll want to look your best to help give a good first impression.

Plan to spend a fair amount of time on campus. You’ll want to get to know everyone and do a good deal of interesting stuff. That doesn’t have to mean spending every waking minute in a room, either. In fact, you might consider leaving your dorm room for a week (yes, even though you’re still in high school!) to meet some of your new friends.

Use the library regularly. The reference library is a great place to pick up a lot of information. Look for books, magazines and other reading material related to college. If you feel particularly adventurous, find a good college book store and buy some college textbooks. A simple way to start the conversation with this group of people is to mention the books you found in the reference library.

Join a study group or a club. There are probably several study groups and clubs at your university. Join one or more of them. This is a great way to make new friends and even have some social time during the evenings. Ask your friends to introduce you to their fellow students. A simple way to start the conversation at a party is to mention that you’re involved in a study group or club.

Start hanging out at the student union. Many students volunteer at the student union, especially in the summer. Look for open office hours when you can hang out with other students. If you enjoy the theater, sign up for free admission to the plays you’re interested in. A simple way to start the college conversation with your peers is to mention how much you enjoyed the plays that night. They’ll be impressed by your knowledge and eager to join your club.

Take a tour. College campuses have plenty of interesting things to see and experience. Talk to tour guides about the history and culture of the campus. Get a feel for the student life and see if any of your friends are interested in going on a tour sometime.

Join a study group. The study group is a great way to have basic conversations about college. Invite your friends to join and bring a book. Have them read a chapter from the book and discuss the characters and plots of the book. This is a fun way to learn about college.
