Many schools are now beginning to hire educational consultants to work with their students on campus. There are several types of student Mentorship available. A school may have an educational consultant who has a one-on-one mentorship with a student and help to advise and guide that student in many of their academic decisions. They are often able to do this through informal meetings at the school, or through networking with other students on campus. Sometimes, the educational consultant will have informal meetings with university professors who are available to help their student with certain classes or to give advice on certain topics.

A more structured mentorship occurs when a trained counsellor or advisor is assigned to a student and taught directly by the mentee. This type of mentorship is more formal and is usually between a teacher and a student. The mentor can be younger or older than the student being mentored, but both must have some area of experience within their field. A career development mentorship provides the opportunity to develop mentoring relationships between peers or between supervisors and staff who are in the same job role. An applicant must demonstrate a passion for mentoring and be willing to provide genuine feedback to the learner. They can discuss issues that relate to their own career progress and can exchange ideas on how to make it more effective.
