The Advantages and Disadvantages of Virtual Reality Learning

Virtual Reality is simply the idea of using digital input devices, typically found in computer games or high-tech gadgets, to allow a user to interact with a non physical reality. In this day and age there are many applications for Virtual Reality, however most are focused on entertainment. While there have been numerous demonstrations of Virtual Reality, perhaps the most well known is the Virtual Boy, which was developed by Nintendo and released in the arcades. Virtual Reality has come a long way since that time, however Virtual Reality applications are still hindered by a number of factors.

Virtual Reality is not new to Learning Light, as Virtual Reality was first introduced in 2021 and since that time have only seen VR improve to be a tested technology. This wasn’t always the case however, and when initially looked at Virtual Reality it was mostly a technology still riddled with issues, such as the poor performance of some of the headsets, poor audio quality, and near to zero response time. All of these issues and more can be found in many video games. High risk learning environments need to be created where students can not only learn, but use the information learned in a safe and controlled environment. This is where high risk learning environments come into play.

Virtual Reality has gone from being purely educational to actually allowing students to use the learning process to enhance their education. One of the most exciting advances in Virtual Reality is Immersive Learning. What makes Immersive Learning possible is that students are actually able to see what is going on around them, as if they were in the actual learning environment. Immersive Learning is particularly successful with language, because with the right goggles, a child is able to hear and speak at the same time, all while absorbing the information. One of the biggest benefits of Immersive Learning is that it allows for a truly personalized learning experience, which is very difficult to replicate within a traditional classroom environment.

Another key component in Immersive Learning is the development of a greater sense of presence. When you are in an Immersive Learning environment, you actually feel as though you are part of the lesson. This is because everything around you is true, including your body, your surroundings, the movements of your instructor, the materials being used, etc. The result is that with any traditional classroom learning experience, the student’s mind begins to focus on all of these different components without really focusing on any one particular thing. By being part of the Immersive Learning environment, students are able to pay greater attention, paying great attention to their instructor, to the materials around them, to their instructor’s body language, to the environment itself, etc., all while completely immersing themselves in the virtual reality.

While there are several advantages of using virtual reality to enhance your learning experience, there are also some disadvantages, as well. One of these disadvantages is that Immersive Learning tends to take time out from the lesson in order to allow students to really get into the experience. Because all of the focus is on the Immersive Learning experience, many students do not have the patience to sit still and really absorb what they are learning. Another drawback is that Immersive Learning tends to be fairly expensive, especially when students make use of programs like Google Cardboard or Adobe Flash to create the Virtual Environment.

Immersive Learning has its advantages and its disadvantages. Virtual reality is a valuable tool in teaching because of the flexibility it provides. If you aren’t using Immersive Learning in your class, it can take up a lot of your teaching time. However, if you are, the Immersive Learning experience can make for a very beneficial and memorable teaching experience. There are many advantages and disadvantages to each type of Virtual Reality Learning.

There are many advantages to Immersive Learning. First of all, virtual reality allows for a much more interesting learning environment. Students are used to being in “the thick of things” when in a classroom, but when you create an immersive environment, they are able to forget about the surroundings and put their concentration into the lessons. The Immersive Learning environment is also easier to teach in than classroom environments because of the increased interactivity.

But, there are some disadvantages as well. One of the biggest disadvantages is that using Virtual Reality Learning can cost a lot more money than regular eLearning courses would. Since the majority of the costs associated with Immersive Learning courses are spent on the development of the Virtual Environment, you are going to spend a lot more money on this than you would with a standard course. Also, many teachers are not comfortable with this type of learning, which means that the content may not be as well learned or applicable on the most sophisticated platforms. Immersive Learning does provide some advantages, though, such as the ability to use the platform in conjunction with traditional methods of learning.
