The University of Sheffield is basically a public research university located in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England. Its history actually traces back to the early foundations of Sheffield Medical School at 1828, then Firth College and then Sheffield Technical College. The University is one of the few places from the United Kingdom that all three levels of government allow to function as a public institution. It has recently been granted permission to expand its wings by up to 200 additional students and staff. The University offers a large number of courses that students can choose from and also boasts of numerous academic and vocational partnerships.

As far as research universities are concerned, Sheffield has achieved high marks in all of them over the years. In the recent past, the university has made great strides in terms of being taken within the top 100 universities lists. It has achieved this through cutting back on costs and increasing its research investments. This has made it one of the most distinguished research universities in the entire world today. Its effort to be included in the QS World University Rankings has gone ahead despite some turbulence in the university’s recent past.

With regards to the student experience, the University of Sheffield strives hard to ensure that each student has an equally good experience. In fact, this is one of the main reasons why it attained first for the honours in science, technology, engineering and maths disciplines. Through the Research Centre for Mental Health, the University of Sheffield has a long standing commitment to improving mental health. The RCPH stands for the School of Clinical Psychology and is a joint initiative of the university, the NHS and the Health & Social Care Association. This initiative has helped many of the students who have become victims of violence or mentally ill.

The other key feature that helps the University of Sheffield climb to the top 100 universities lists is the international student experience. The city of Sheffield has welcomed thousands of overseas students who are willing to undergo a quality teaching and research environment. Professor Peter Piper, Emeritus Professor of Education and tutor to the university’s department of geography was given an OBE for his tireless efforts in helping students plan and undertake graduate and postgraduate studies. In 2021 he was made a knighted by the Queen Elizabeth II in recognition of his services to the nation. He has also won numerous research grants for his pioneering studies on the Thames Estuary. Other achievements by Professor Piper include the receipt of the University of Sheffield Queen’s Cup and the John Lewis prize for academic excellence.

 

Professor Robin Evans, current president of the University of Sheffield and previously a professor in the Department of History and Politics was awarded the Order of the British empire. A native of Sheffield, he joined the university as a research fellow in zoology. During his time as a lecturer he co-authored a famous study on the civil war. During his presidency he has been busy working with students outside of his academic area, such as in the field of community development. He has also become one of the most active members of the city’s vibrant academic community, serving as Vice-President for Finance and running the popular University Online webpage.

The University of Sheffield has one of the largest libraries in the country and one of the largest collections of its kind outside the United Kingdom.
