Since establishing in 1977, McMaster University has grown into one of the world’s top education centers. Established as an Ontario university, the main campus is in Hamilton, Ontario. The main campus is located on 120 kilograms of property near the communities of Ainslie Park and Westdale, nearby to the famous Royal Botanical Gardens in downtown Hamilton. Students at the main campus are exposed to all the opportunities available in the field of research. Several campus colleges house students who pursue graduate studies in the fields of arts, humanities, science, medicine and others. Some campus colleges also provide professional academic programs and certificate programs, focusing mainly on specific areas of study.
There are undergraduate programs in arts and sciences, including a Bachelor of Arts in Arts (BFA); Bachelor of Science in Science (BSCS); Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration (BAB); and Master of Science (MS). A number of community and inter-campus organizations also thrive at the main campus. The student body at the undergraduate level is approximately 1400 students, with the average age being late 20s. In addition, there are a couple of undergraduate programs in business administration and nursing.
The Bachelor of Arts in Arts program enables students to develop talent in creative and artistic areas such as the visual and performing arts, music, drama, television and film. The Bachelor of Science in Science (BSCS) degree trains students to use scientific methods in business. The Bachelor of Business Administration (MBA) degree is specifically designed for busy professionals who want to advance in their careers by specializing in a particular industry. The Master of Science in Business Administration is for those interested in planning, organizing and executing a variety of business activities.
On campus, there are a couple of Fine Arts facilities, including the Centre for Teaching and Learning, an innovative multimedia learning and research facility; the McMaster Museum & Conference Centre, which is home to over 50 exhibits and events; and the university library, which houses a large collection of publications on a variety of disciplines. The McMaster University campus has many recreational options, such as swimming, tennis, hiking, boating, golf, and lacrosse. The recreation facilities are complimented by numerous campus gyms and fitness centers. In addition, there is an annual Student Fair at the MacDaddy Recreational Complex. The Student Government Association and the campus events committee are also responsible for maintaining a positive social environment on campus.
The Bachelor of Arts in Nursing degree is particularly well suited to candidates who have an interest in health care as their career path choices. In particular, this degree can provide candidates with the necessary skills to work in a doctor’s office, an emergency room or other health care facility. It can also provide candidates with the knowledge and certification to become an LPN or RN. The Bachelor of Science in Business Administration provides an in-depth understanding of the business side of the healthcare industry. This degree is particularly well suited for working adults and those who already have a full-time day job.
Located on the east side of town, close to downtown Hamilton, the McMaster University campus is also close to two major hospitals – The Hamilton General Hospital and The Niagara Falls General Hospital. The hospital campuses have two branch campuses – Hamilton Healthcare campus and McMaster University Healthcare campus. Both branches are home to a total of about six hundred and fifty doctors, nurses, technicians and other medical support staff. The campus also has a health centre that offers a range of clinical services.
The Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree is available through the Campus Program, which is not affiliated with a specific hospital. It is intended for students who wish to obtain a four-year nursing degree that can be renewed periodically. A large part of the coursework in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program will be comprised of core credits that require laboratory experience, clinical experience and coursework that include human anatomy, microbiology, nutrition and surgery. The Bachelor of Science in Business Administration will require students to complete an executive management course and a course in accounting.
The school has an outstanding athletic program that boasts twenty-six athletic venues, including but not limited to soccer fields, tennis courts, golf courses, water parks and hockey rinks. The sports programs are ranked in the top twenty in the country by The Sporting News. The men’s and women’s programs have been rated in the top ten nationally amongst universities. The student-faculty ratio is one of the best in the country for its size. As part of a large overall research facility, the researchers are also involved in a variety of different projects throughout the year.
